Meeting Music Enthusiast Neil

 By Aidan Kelly
ack51@txstate.edu
Neil's hair getting longer and longer until he chops it off for charity on March 3rd
SAN MARCOS - Meet Neil Manning, a creative and passionate 19-year-old senior studying Journalism and Music at Texas State University. Some of his hobbies include playing video games and practicing guitar, which he taught himself to play. He's also currently a Music Reviewer for local station KTSW, where he's written about a multitude of genres, from Hip-Hop to Folk and everything in between!

His curiosity and appreciation for music began at a young age, where he grew up listening to different music from his mother, father, and older brother. Mom always played country music, while dad preferred classic rock, like The Beatles and The Eagles. Neil takes pride in knowing he has rock solid relationships with his family. He also loved baseball growing up, whether it was on the pitcher's mound or shortstop, Neil was a talented and determined player. When he wasn't on the field, he was keeping up with the game off the field cheering on the Cubs.

Neil's had the opportunity to see some pretty great artists live, including Paul McCartney, Spoon, Weezer, and the Avett Brothers at both Austin City Limits and SXSW festivals. While his favorite current genre is Indie music, he does an effective job in remaining professional and unbiased in his continuous journey of music discovery. After school, he hopes to work as either a music journalist or a travel journalist. Another fun fact Neil shared with me was that for months he's been growing out his hair to donate to Children With Hair Loss. Overall, Neil is a interesting, caring, driven individual that isn't letting anything stop him from achieving his goals.

Meeting Sam Durhman

By: Megan Hall
Mkh76@txstate.edu

Sam Durhman, age 20, is a Sophomore at Texas State University majoring in Electronic Media and minoring in Sports Psychology.

Durhman grew up in Austin, Texas with his parents, an older brother and a younger sister by his side. Prior to college, he spent most days of the week playing on the Texas Junior Stars Travel Team as a left defenseman. While playing hockey didn't leave much room in his daily schedule to participate in other high school sports, he believes hockey taught him great discipline and many life lessons. After graduating McNeil High School, Durhman attended Austin Community College before transferring to Texas State University.

Durhman's passion for sports influenced his decision to pursue Electronic Media in hopes to some day work in sports broadcasting. Intrigued by the technical side of camera work, filming, and all things "behind the scenes" in sports, he hopes to intern with the broadcasting team at the H-E-B Center (formally the known as the Cedar Park Center) located in Cedar Park, Texas. The H-E-B Center is home to the Texas Stars and the Austin Spurs, whose players will eventually go on to play for the Dallas Stars and the San Antonio Spurs; therefore providing interns with great knowledge, opportunities and connections in the sports broadcasting field.

Upon arriving to Texas State University, Durhman joined Beta Upsilon Chi, where he has met some of his closest friends and grown from many new experiences. Durhman's favorite memory since transferring to Texas State University was scaling Enchanted Rock off trail with a large group of his fraternity brothers. Durhman expressed that it had been a great bonding experience, and that the feeling of reaching the top alongside his fraternity brothers is something he will never forget.

Meet Chelsea

SAN MARCOS - Growing up in Rockport, Texas, Chelsea Billings knew that if she didn’t move away from college, she would never leave the town. Not a lot of native Texans can say they grew up by a beach, which is something unique about Chelsea’s childhood. Chelsea grew up with a loving family: Mom, Dad, two older sisters and two dogs.

When it was time to head off to college, Chelsea chose Texas State because the river reminded her of her beloved hometown by the water. During her first years of college, she was a little indecisive about what her major should be and had her fair share of exploring different paths for her future. Currently, Chelsea is a senior majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Business. She is really excited about where this major will take her in life and hopes everything will fall into place.

In her free time Chelsea likes to be outside and loves to be around dogs. Her roommate has a dog that she adores and enjoys spending time with; she also has a dog of her own: Bunny, a yellow Labrador retriever. Bunny lives with Chelsea’s parents, which is hard because she misses her a lot. In Chelsea’s future she hopes to travel more, becoming more cultured and experienced before she settles down with a solid career and family.

While Aidan is majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising, he isn't too sure on his exact future career. As a junior, he still has some time to decide. Thankfully, Eric's friendship is a positive influence in his daily life.

At the age of 20, Aidan so far has enjoyed a life of good family, memories and friends. Whether he goes into PR work for a major company, creates the next new fashion trend or wins the lottery and moves to an island, he will definitely make a splash.

SAN MARCOS- Amanda Carvallo,  who prefers to go by ,“Mandi”, is keeping the ball rolling with pursuing a degree at Texas State University. Mandi, currently a Sophomore with a Public Relations major, aspires to be a speech writer although she is hesitant to enter politics.

Born and raised in Plano, TX, she decided to attend Texas State because not too many people from her town came here. Plus,  the nearby artsy city of Austin attracted her attention. Despite the fact that she is not vocally fluent in Spanish she understands it beyond doubt since her parents are from El Salvador and Venezuela.

As a Frank Ocean enthusiast she is inspired by one of his popular songs, “Close to You”. She enjoys writing and hanging out with her roommate’s cat in her spare time. Right now she is brainstorming for her blog in the class, “Fundamentals of Digital Online Media” and hopes to spark up some conversation with her topics. Don’t be surprised if you hear this determined individuals name in the nearby future!
