MC 1313 Media Writing

Audrey Garcia with the Skaftārhreppur Glacier
To some Audrey Garcia may be just a student but what they don't know is she's a student with big plans to help the environment.

Garcia grew up in Pharr, Texas, but spent many summers at her grandparents house in Wimberley, Texas. It's during the summer that she saw Texas State University and first witnessed all the natural beauty this university had to offer. It was no doubt that this is where she wanted to further her education.

After receiving her first bachelor's in Political Science, Garcia realized that she wanted to speak to others about Political Science. She decided to come back to Texas State to obtain her second bachelors's in Journalism with a concentration in Digital and Online Media. Though she was well educated in Political science, what she wanted was to convey all that information in a civil manner. When asked which out of the two majors were her favorite she stated, "Political science, since she was able to it understand it better."

Garcia wishes to graduate and pursue a career writing about conservation efforts and needs for the Texas Parks and  Wildlife magazine. She first became interested in conservation after travelling to Iceland this past summer. "This passion for environment conservation opened inside of me and I knew that I wanted to make sure our lands are always protected." There's no doubt with attitude like that, that our lands will be in good hands.

What to Know About Brooke

By Rebecca Luttrell
rpl20@txstate.edu

Brooke Brumley is a sophomore at Texas State University where she is pursuing a degree in Advertising with a minor in Psychology.

Brumley was born in San Marcos, Texas, but moved to Seguin, Texas, about 25 miles south of San Marcos, at the age of 6. She attended high school there where she played volleyball. After graduating high school, Brumley decided to attend Texas State University. She decided Texas State was the perfect school for her because she could stay close to her family and members of her family had gone there for many generations.

While attending Texas State, Brumley has become an active member in her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. She says some of her favorite things to do in San Marcos are to go to Sewell Park with her sorority sisters and go hiking.  When Brumley isn't hanging out with her sisters or hiking, she is a waitress/bartender at a local country club. To destress from her busy life, Brumley likes to do yoga daily. When asked, “why yoga?” she responded, “Because it’s a work out, but you are also in a meditative state so I can clear my head.” She has aspirations of possibly being a yoga instructor one day.

Brumley’s goal in life is to simply travel more. While having been on some exciting trips, she has never been to Europe, and hopes to one day visit family friends in Sweden.

One of Brumley’s pet peeves is tardiness. She strives to always be early to things and cannot stand being late. Her personal motto is “smile as much as possible.”

Tatum with her pug Elliot
Tatum Kosiara moved from Valparaiso, Indiana, a short 30-minute drive southeast of Chicago, to have a fresh start at her college career. She is currently a Public Relations student at Texas State University.

Though she’s far from home she commemorates her family by going to school in Texas as they all did, and even being in the same sorority as her aunt, Delta Gamma. Her accent comes and goes as she’s been in Texas for over two years, but whenever she returns home “it’s so strong” she laughs.

Originally a fashion merchandising major, Kosiara knows her love for the beauty and makeup industry hasn’t faded and wants to pursue a PR career with a major beauty company. She even got into the Columbia Fashion program in south Chicago, but she has no plans of leaving Texas. So, after graduation, she wants to begin her PR journey at H-E-B as they have such a good reputation and quality of business and believes it to be a great start for her.

Kosiara’s main priority right now is school and focusing on her education. Whenever she’s free you can catch her studying at the school library. “When I’m not at Alkek, I’m honestly doing stuff with my sorority, like philanthropy wise”, says Kosiara. She does a lot of volunteering and helping the community while spending time with her sorority sisters.

Breanna McMurray

Breanna McMurray is a senior, Digital Media Innovation major at Texas State University. Following her December 2019 graduation, she has plans to return to her hometown of Austin, Texas and get involved in the field of Digital Marketing, Social Media or Web Development. When asked if she ever planned to leave Texas after her graduation, she expressed her contentment with remaining in her hometown; however, Colorado also piqued her interest.

Outside of class, McMurray is an active student on campus. A member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, she participates in many acts of service such as Girls on the Run, a 5K geared towards inspiring young girls to get fit in a positive and productive way. Other activities she enjoys in her free time include hiking, going to the movies and spending time with friends and her black lab, Attie.

*Fun Fact: Attie, although a girl, is named after protagonist Atticus Finch from the book "To Kill a Mockingbird".

McMurray originally never considered attending Texas State because it is “just down the road” from Austin. However, touring the campus not only made her reverse her feelings about its proximity to her hometown, but it also opened her eyes to the possibility of attending because she realized the scenic views that encompassed the school.

Although she will be graduating during winter, McMurray has every intention to keep the Texas State tradition alive and take the plunge into the San Marcos River following her ceremony. She is both excited and prepared for her remaining months at Texas State University.

In high school, she was in the band where she learned to play the flute and the piccolo. In her spare time, she enjoys watching “The Office” and other comedy shows or movies, while also getting a good nap in here and there. In the future, Luttrell hopes to find a career in event planning, such as weddings. Gabbie Morris is a 20-year-old Public Relations major at Texas State University. Starting her college career at the University of Alabama, Morris transferred to the heart of Texas to start her sophomore year out fresh. After changing her sports broadcasting major to PR, her main goal is to work for a large PR firm. Morris' dream job would be to work for a makeup/beauty company as their Public Relations professional.

When she's not in class studying to pursue her dream, Morris can be found working at her job at the local movie theatre, working out at the gym, or hanging out with her friends. Having grown up as an only child in Frisco, Texas, Morris found that desired sibling-bond with her mom. Her role model, her mother, and her best friend, Morris' mom has inspired her to be the honest, loyal, and driven young woman she is today.

In the future, along with her goal of working in PR for a makeup company, Morris hopes to travel. Of all the places she's been so far, her favorite destination was Panama in Central America. Morris' dad grew up there, and seeing the places where he was born and raised has brought her closer to him. For now, Morris will continue working to make her dreams come true, and she is excited about what the future holds for her.

All About Ashley

All About Ashley!

By: Gabriella Morris
g_m334@txstate.edu

Prior to moving down south half way through high school, Ashley Greenwald lived most of her life in New Lenox, Illinois, spending most of her time playing sports and enjoying trips to the city with her friends.

After moving to Texas, Ashley decided to attend Texas State University, she recalls being drawn by the river that flows through campus that got her hooked on the campus. While living in Illinois she danced, and played volleyball for her high school and club, she enjoyed playing club volleyball the most because she was team captain and got the opportunity to travel to different places.

Ashley is fascinated by public relations and fashion and hopes to combine the two for her future career, wanting to move to a big city and do PR for a big fashion company in the industry. One thing Ashley really wants in a job is to travel, especially to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Italy.

Ashley loves spending time with her family, she has a younger sister who she used to not get along with when they were younger but have gotten closer over the years and is going to be attending Texas State in the fall. When talking about her father Ashley lit up, telling me her dad works for Bud Light and has the opportunity of going to any event for free that they sponsor, recalling that just last week she had court side seats to the Spurs game.

Whether its floating the river, hanging out with friends, or sitting court side, Ashley is an outgoing and friendly girl that Texas State is lucky to have.

Meet Anna Keyser

Anna Kayser is currently a sophomore at Texas State University, Eat 'Em Up! After being raised in San Antonio, Texas, she didn't seem to get enough of this beautiful city as she plans on returning after she graduates. After graduation, she would like to go back for internships involving broadcasting.

Keyser has a deep love for music. In fact, she stared performing at the age of two. She decided to begin college majoring in music. She has performed in a great amount of shows, yet she found herself a little burnt out. After some time, she decided that field wasn't what she wanted to stay in, so she switched to journalism. She would still like to incorporate music in her career path, however.

When Keyser isn't in class she can be found listening to music or hanging out with her roommate. Anna's favorite quality about herself is that she is a people person. She has no issue making connections with people and talking to different people. However, she believes this can also negatively affect her. "I'd like to see where life takes me," said Keyser.

If Keyser could go anywhere in the world, she would travel to Ireland or the islands off Britain. She loves nature and how green these locations are. To get in touch with Keyser, you can find her on campus at the LBJ building studying. She loves relaxing on the couches while having the comfort of being at home.

Robinson's hobbies include singing, sightseeing and horseback riding. Robinson mentioned she is very passionate about horseback riding. She feels a connection with the horses when she is with them. That love to love connection. Kristin used to be a part of the Equestrian Team at Texas State University. I noticed she has a neckless that has a horse charm on it so you can tell she really passionate about horseback riding.

Robinson loves to go sightseeing. She loves to see different places involving nature. Nature is very beautiful to her.

Robinson’s favorite part about Texas State is the river. She loves to float in the river. She also loves to ride the Glass-Bottom Boat. She recalled a memory, where her family and herself went on a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour. She said "it was a lot of fun and very pretty area."
